Stephanie Butler, LMHC — Trauma Therapist in Shalimar & Fort Walton Beach, FL
You are not a problem to solve.
Focused, evidence-based therapy for people who understand why they struggle but want daily life to feel more manageable, connected, and steady.
Healing does not come from trying harder or fixing yourself. It comes from being understood, supported, and met with approaches that address both the nervous system and lived experience.
Over the years, I have seen how often people blame themselves for symptoms that are actually adaptive responses to chronic stress, trauma, and long-standing emotional responsibility.
When someone has spent years being capable, dependable, and responsible for holding things together, burnout is not a failure; it is a signal that something deeper needs care.
It doesn’t have to be “like this” forever.
I work with people who fear things may never change or who worry they’ll always be gripped by anxiety, depression, trauma, or the weight of their past.
Most of my clients are used to figuring things out on their own. They’ve built careers, families, and lives that look fine on the outside, but inside, they feel stuck. And because they’ve always been the “capable one,” not being able to fix this themselves feels frustrating and isolating.
Maybe you’ve tried therapy before and walked away disappointed, feeling like you just talked in circles. Maybe you were handed a prescription and told it would help, but it hasn’t. Either way, you’re craving something deeper—something that actually gets to the root.
Wherever you find yourself today, I want you to know this: change is possible.
My style
Therapy with me is…
-
I have advanced training in therapy methods that go beyond simply talking about problems and hoping they resolve on their own. My work is focused on helping your brain and nervous system actually process what’s keeping you stuck.
-
I believe therapy should be a two-way street. That means asking thoughtful questions, making observations, and gently challenging you when I see opportunities for growth — not simply nodding, smiling, and taking notes. I’m engaged and present in the work with you.
-
I respect your time, energy, experiences, and perspectives. Mental health challenges are not moral failures. You will always be treated with dignity, care, and professionalism, and your privacy will be respected at all times.
-
I have over 20 years of experience doing this work and intentionally keep my caseload small and focused so I can offer meaningful support. If we work together, it’s because I’m confident I have the training and expertise to help you move forward. If I’m not the right fit, I will help you find someone who is.
-
I’m honest and straightforward in my approach. I’m not here to tell you what you want to hear or keep you in therapy longer than necessary. My goal is to help you feel better, gain clarity, and leave therapy with the skills and insight you need to sustain change.
Whatever you’re bringing to the table, it’s welcome here.
You deserve a therapist who is equipped to handle the real stuff: the layers, the complexity, the things you’ve been carrying quietly for years.
My training and experience focus on going beyond surface-level symptom relief, so we’re not just managing symptoms. When we work together, I want you to know you can bring anything into the room, and I will walk with you through it.
I’ve been a therapist for nearly two decades, and I’ve seen how traditional talk therapy often falls short. That’s why I sought out advanced trauma approaches like EMDR and Accelerated Resolution Therapy® (ART). My clients tell me ART feels faster, deeper, and more effective than anything they’ve tried before—and I agree. It’s the approach I believe in because I’ve seen it change lives, again and again.
This work is grounded in advanced clinical training and evidence-based practices.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
People often notice a greater sense of calm and clarity in their day-to-day life. Decisions feel less loaded. Conversations feel easier to enter and easier to leave. Many describe feeling less reactive, more present with their partner or children, and more confident expressing themselves.
Over time, clients often experience greater emotional steadiness, a quieter internal dialogue, and a stronger ability to set and maintain boundaries without guilt or overthinking. There is often a renewed capacity for enjoyment and connection that feels natural rather than forced.
-
Insight and understanding matter, but they don’t always lead to change on their own. My work focuses on how experiences are stored in the nervous system and how to help the brain process what hasn’t fully resolved, so progress doesn’t rely solely on analysis or willpower.
-
Not necessarily. While some people benefit from weekly sessions for a period of time, others do well with a more flexible pace depending on their goals and capacity. Therapy with me is intentional and collaborative, not based on indefinite weekly appointments. Most of my clients schedule every 2 weeks, some once a month. It’s all personalized and individualized.
-
No. Trauma-focused therapy, like ART, does not mean reliving or retelling everything in detail. We move at a pace that feels safe and respectful of your nervous system, with an emphasis on stability, integration, and trust. I love ART because you do not have to retell your painful stories for it to work!
-
People who tend to benefit most are thoughtful, motivated, and ready to look beneath surface-level coping. You don’t need to have everything figured out, just a willingness to be curious and open to a different way of healing.

Feeling understood and safe matters. That’s why I offer a free consultation — so you can ask questions, get a sense of how I work, and decide whether this feels like the right next step for you.
