Why ART Helps Even If You Don’t Know Where to Start
One of the most common things I hear from people before they start Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is:
"I don’t even know where to start."
And my response? You don’t have to.
In fact, one of the reasons I love ART so much is that it works even when you don’t have a clear story or specific memory in mind. You don’t need to come in with your whole trauma history mapped out. You don’t have to explain every emotion you’ve been feeling. You just have to be willing to explore what’s showing up in your body and mind right now.
Let’s Be Honest: Life Isn’t Always Clear-Cut
Sometimes our symptoms show up long before we understand the cause. You might feel anxious every morning and have no idea why. Or maybe you find yourself avoiding certain people or situations but can’t connect the dots. Maybe you just feel heavy, overwhelmed, or emotionally stuck and can’t figure out what triggered it.
That’s where ART comes in.
ART Works at the Subconscious Level
Unlike talk therapy, which relies heavily on language and conscious awareness, ART taps into the subconscious. That means we can work on what your body and nervous system are holding onto—even if your mind hasn’t fully pieced it together yet.
You don’t need to explain or justify everything. You don’t even have to know exactly what the “problem” is. The therapy itself helps bring clarity.
We Start With What You Do Know
You might not know the origin of your fear, but you know that you feel anxious in crowds. You might not remember all the details of a painful relationship, but you know that you’re still carrying the weight of it. You might not be able to name the exact trauma, but you know that certain sounds, smells, or memories create an emotional reaction.
We start there.
In an ART session, we begin with what’s present for you now—a feeling, a body sensation, an image, or a stuck thought—and let your brain do the rest. The process often brings up what needs to be healed, even if you didn’t consciously realize it was still affecting you.
You Don’t Have to Talk Through It All
This is a big reason clients love ART. If you’re not ready to talk about something—or don’t even have the words for it yet—you don’t have to.
You do the processing internally, using guided eye movements and visualization. That means you can heal without retraumatizing yourself or reliving every painful moment out loud.
ART Helps You Untangle What Feels Like a Mess
If you’re someone who thinks, “I should have this figured out by now” or “Why do I feel this way when nothing bad has happened?”—you are not alone.
We don’t always get a clear story. Trauma can be subtle, layered, or stored in ways our logical brain doesn’t fully understand. ART helps untangle that emotional clutter without needing everything to be perfect or processed in order.
You Can Just Show Up
That’s all you have to do. Just show up. Bring your uncertainty, your confusion, your tangled-up thoughts and emotions. We’ll sort through it together.
And more often than not, the clarity comes after the healing begins.
If you feel like something needs to shift but you don’t even know what it is, that’s okay. ART might be the path you didn’t know you needed.
